De Kelders is perfectly situated to use as a base to explore some of the other Overberg towns and attractions. Hermanus and its famous Grotto Beach are a 40 min drive away, and picturesque Stanford is only 15 minutes.
With a coastline to rival the most spectacular in the world, the aquamarine waters of De Kelders, Gansbaai and Franskraal will enchant you. Make sure to visit De Kelders beach, Blousloep beach, Die Plaat beach, Franskraal beach and a few of the others too. Some are sandy – perfect for sandcastles with the kids – and some are pebbly, and thus more suited to hours of leisurely snorkelling. When the weather is fine, pack a picnic basket and spend the day splashing about in the waves or working on your tan.
For this activity we suggest you assign a designated driver. But do visit a few of the wineries and breweries in the area. The beautiful Whale Coast Brewing Co, Lomond Wine Estate and Birkenhead Brewery are all no more than 20 minutes away. Cheers!
A leisurely drive along the tarred R43 between the quaint missionary village of Elim and Bredasdorp takes you past impressive wineries on the Elim Wine Route that all offer wine-tasting, sales and tours by appointment.
Between July and December a visitor of a larger variety graces our shores. De Kelders is world famous (not kidding) for some of the best land-based whale watching on the planet.
Come wave a BIG hello as the Southern Right whales splash into town.
For those in need of an adrenaline rush, shark cage diving in Gansbaai is an absolute must-do activity. The town is not known as the Great White Shark Capital of the World for nothing.
Thanks to the seal and penguin colonies on Dyer and Geyser Islands, just offshore of Gansbaai, these majestic beasts call this area home. Not for the faint-hearted, but a memory you are unlikely to ever forget.
If you like a slice of history with your holiday, visit the Klipgat Cave – a two-chamber cave which was home to Stone Age humans.
You will need a permit to visit this protected site, but it can easily be organised with Walker Bay Nature Reserve.
